Reportage Evaluation

Reportage – South Leeds

For my final piece I produced a series of 8 images that each relate to an aspect of south Leeds that I wanted to pick up on. The themes were Natural, Vandalism, Decay, History, Living, Colour, Fun, and Youth. I believe that I was successful in communicating my findings of the area, because I looked at the connotations of the images that I found for the type.

One thing that I feel could have been improved was my illustration around the area, because I feel that I did not do enough, I spent most of my time taking photographs of things that I found of interest. I also feel that if I had have done more drawing, my final piece would have had much more thought go into it.

The Layout of the typography on the acetates was a success. I tried to set it out so that it could be read in a specific order, because I wanted to place certain words over different parts of the image. I chose to use acetate rather than actually printing the type onto the images because then the images are separate from the text. I wanted this because the main words are separate to the images, connotations of what is shown. The smaller of the type is denoting what it is and where I found it. I also received good feedback that the acetate looked really interesting when light shone through it and the words left silhouettes on the pictures.

Throughout the project I think that I could have organised my time much better. If I had done then I would have probably found it much easier to think of ideas and look for areas of interest.

I found that the crit that we had where we presented out books was very helpful in pushing me forward. One of the comments was “what do the images actually say about your area?” This is what led me onto thinking about type and analysing my images as I take them so that they relate to my route. This is when I started to think about the connotations. Something else that was brought up was the question “did you actually find it like that?” which makes me feel that I could have emphasised it actually being found with a photograph of the subject from further out. However I found that including where I found the things in the type.

I feel that I could have put more effort into the finish of my final images. I had a few problems when I was mounting them. I also struggled to affix the acetate to my images without damaging the images and I feel that I could have put more thought into it.

Overall I feel that it has been a good project and that I have been somewhat successful in communicating what it is that defines what I found in the area. However next time I am definitely going to organise my time better so that I don’t struggle so much for ideas.
